DIY Produce Storage Bin

Hey guys, this is Susan from Mellowpine.

Many followers of mellowpine requested me to make small projects useful for the home using minimal tools.

So here I am back with a series of projects which can be completed in under two hours.

I’m serious here, I timed everything and completed it in that time. Once you go through the project, you’ll see how easy it is too.

MellowPine is reader-supported. When you buy through links on my site, I may earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you.

How to build the Produce Storage Bin

Note: Actual dimensions of lumber is used for the entire build. Not the nominal dimensions. This entire build is done using ¾” thick lumber.

Step 1: First step we cut the two pieces for the sides and one side for the separator at ¾” x 8″ x 6″ size from the ¾” x 11-¼” x 48″ lumber using the circular saw and the Kreg accu-cut guide.

(We’ll be cutting the corner of these pieces in another step to bring it to the shape in the plan below).

The separator piece has the same dimensions as the side piece, except it doesn’t have a slot like a side piece.

Step 2: Then we made the bottom piece, back piece and the front piece (except the bevel) for the bin as per the plan from the ¾” x 11-¼” x 48″ lumber.

We can use the scrap piece left from making the bottom piece for making the front piece, as it’s only 2.8 inches in width.

Step 3: Next we cut off the corner as per the plan for the sides and the separator of the produce bin.

First we drew a line as per the dimensions and chopped it off using the miter saw.

Step 5: We need a bevel for the top edge of the front piece.

We used the circular saw with the blade angle tilted to make the bevel.

We used the widths for both sides of the bevel (2.8″ and 2″) to draw a line and set the blade angle along this line for making the bevel cut.

Step 6: Then marked the slots for the handles as per the plan using a round washer piece we had.

Then we had to cut out the slots for the handle.

We used a drill to make holes for inserting the jig saw blade. Then we cut the slot out using the jig saw.

Step 7: We then sanded everything down up to 220 grit (progressively from 120 grit).

Step 8: We then made pilot holes for screws in each piece as per the plan. We used 1-¼” sized screws for this project. Then used the countersinking bit to countersink all the screw locations.

We then used a combination of screws and wood glue to join the pieces together using the impact driver.

Step 9: After this we applied cherry stain over the entire piece to finish it.

Then made a wooden furniture pad/protector for the bin using small pieces of pine measuring 3/4″ x 3/4″ size and 3/4″ screws.

Don’t forget to stain the furniture pad as well.

Step 10: Then we wanted to have the option of labelling each rack in the bin.

So we used chalkboard paint to do this. We made a freehand pattern for the chalkboard area.

We fixed painters tape on the entire front piece and used the template we made to cut out tape from the area we wanted to apply chalkboard paint on.
