Steps to Cutting Concrete Block with a Circular Saw
Place the concrete block on the work surface.
Begin by marking the top of the block using a pencil and a speed square.
Place the speed square on top of the block while making sure the line is perpendicular and straight.
Once the line is marked, it’s time to saw.
For cutting a concrete block with a circular saw you need a diamond masonry blade.
This blade is commonly available.
If you try to cut concrete with a blade meant for wood, the results won’t be ideal.
diamond masonry blade has the added advantage of lasting longer than the regular blades while also being more efficient at cutting.
When the blade of your choice is fitted onto the saw, set the depth of the blade to the lowest setting.
Since a lot of dust is generated while sawing, ensure you wear protection for eyes, nose, and ears.
Gently begin cutting on the line marked and make sure never to go too deep too fast.
Deepen the mark gradually and continue so until the entire depth of the blade has reached.
Flip the block over and repeat the process.
Be careful of kickback and never push on the saw too hard.
Once both sides of the block are sawed, separate the blocks into two using a hammer and a chisel.
Finish and smoothen the edges of the block using either the chisel or the saw.
With this step, you have successfully completed cutting a concrete block using a circular saw.

Safety Tips for Cutting Concrete
- Wear sturdy work shoes or boots, long sleeve shirts, and long pants while working with concrete blocks.
- Micro-fine particles generated while sawing through the concrete blocks are dangerous to inhale, so protection for eyes, face, and ear protection is highly recommended.
- If you can smell or taste concrete, immediately stop sawing and re-adjust the mask/respirator.
- Before making any adjustments, make sure the saw is unplugged.
- Make sure depth is set all the way down before you begin adjusting. Doing so helps in identifying the point to be cut easily.
- Stay away from the saw while cutting.
- Never stay right behind or too close to the running blade to avoid injury in case of kickback. Kickback is when the back end of the blade catches hold of the wood, and the whole saw jumps back at you. Kickback is extremely dangerous and must be avoided.
